| Kanotix is for Debian stable, with easy installation and good hardware detection.
After lying in hybernation in first half of 2007 after many developers
left to start sidux, they are back again. While the sidux group went for
Debian sid, Kanotix moved to Debian stable for a rock solid operating system. Now if you want a solid OS (Debian Stable) with good hardware detection, Kanotix is your OS. I did not see it use SWAP when RAM was free. Dynamic frequency scaling is enabled by default, my 2 GHz cpu runs at 800 MHz most of the time and my laptop uses about 16 Watt of power with good display brightness. The Kanotix forums, like sidux forums, are very friendly and supportive. You may not get a reply in minutes like in Ubuntu forums, but you will hardly need any help. The best part is that you are most likely to have crisp help from one of the developers. That is something you will never get in forums of distros like Ubuntu. Kanotix comes in only one flavour, 32-bit. One Live-cum-Install CD, Open Office and Iceweasel included. They do not have any official final release yet, the latest is KANOTIX 2007 THORHAMMER RC7, but that is as good as any final release. Kanotix uses KDE as its desktop manager.BERYL is included and you can set you default Window Manager if Beryl crashes. Kanotix comes with ndiswrapper, so if you do not have any Linux driver for your hardware, you can install and use the Window$ driver. Installation and removal of packages is done by apt-get in the Terminal (or Konsole), and you are supposed to use the Debian stable (ETCH at present) repository that is enabled by default. Installation took about 25 minutes on my machine on which Ubuntu took 35 minutes and sidux 7 minutes. After installation you may have to get the fonts right with forum support. For tft you can use the following- In a terminal- su update-scripts-kanotix.sh chvt 1 This will take you to init 1. Now login as root and - install-fglrx-debian.sh -ab Soon after you install, just enable your networking.Do it here- kanotix>configure>network Kanotix can be used by beginners in Linux. You can run the CD in live mode. website: kanotix.com Some of the links on their website are not well maintained, so here are a few links Dowload Page: (Here you will find versions RC6, RC6B, RC6C and RC7) You will also find XDELTA patch for RC6-RC6A, RC6A-RC6B, RC6B-RC6C and RC6C-RC7.. http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/preview/ The new manual is here- http://kanotix.com/files/fix/manual/ |
